Looking for the perfect 5-day São Miguel Azores itinerary? This guide covers exactly how to spend 5 days exploring São Miguel, including Sete Cidades, Furnas, Nordeste, hot springs, waterfalls, black sand beaches, whale watching, and the island’s best viewpoints.
After exploring São Miguel myself, I designed this itinerary to balance adventure, scenic drives, relaxing thermal baths, and realistic travel times so you can see the best of the island without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Sete Cidades and São Miguel’s Stunning West Coast

I’m going to put this as Day 1, but this should actually be for your best weather day. 💡Check the webcams before you head up to Sete Cidades as this area requires good weather, otherwise you may see very little. And since this is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Azores, you’ll definitely want good weather! Begin the morning at Miradouro da Vista do Rei (King’s View) for your first panoramic view over the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. You’ll also see the Monte Palace Hotel Ruins nearby. Don’t miss Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, one of the most iconic viewpoints in São Miguel and easily one of the best photo spots on the island. After soaking in the scenery, drive down into the charming village of Sete Cidades where you can stop for coffee, rent a kayak, or simply enjoy the peaceful lakeside atmosphere. 💡We had a fantastic Bifana (Portuguese sandwich) from a little food truck there.

Continue along the coast toward Ponta da Ferraria, a unique natural swimming area where geothermal hot water mixes with the Atlantic Ocean. If conditions are calm, it’s an unforgettable place for a swim. 💡Check the road conditions first as a landslide has caused issues to the access road.
On the way back toward Ponta Delgada, stop at Plantação de Ananás dos Açores to learn about the island’s famous pineapple-growing process inside traditional greenhouses. Grab some pineapple treats afterward!
Day 2: Lagoa do Fogo, Tea Plantations, and Waterfalls
Day two takes you through the lush center and north coast of São Miguel, where volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and rolling green hills make this one of the island’s most scenic drives. Start early at Lagoa do Fogo, a stunning crater lake surrounded by untouched nature. The viewpoints above the lake are often clearest in the morning before clouds roll in, so arriving early is worth it. 💡Again, check the webcams before heading out! Afterward, head north toward Ribeira Grande for breakfast or a quick walk through the historic town center.

Continue east along the coast to the Gorreana Tea plantation, Europe’s oldest tea plantation and one of the most beautiful stops on the island. The winding roads through the tea fields are incredibly photogenic, and you can tour the factory and sample local tea before continuing your drive. Nearby, stop at Cascata do Salto do Cabrito or Salto do Prego if you’re up for a waterfall hike. End the day relaxing in the warm geothermal waters of Caldeira Velha, one of the best hot spring experiences in São Miguel.
Day 3: Furnas, Hot Springs, and Volcanic Landscapes
No São Miguel itinerary is complete without spending a full day exploring Furnas, a geothermal town known for bubbling hot springs, lush botanical gardens, and volcanic cooking. Begin the morning at Miradouro do Pico do Ferro for sweeping views over Furnas Lake and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Then head down to Lagoa das Furnas, where you can watch locals pull traditional cozido stew from underground volcanic steam vents.

Spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful gardens and thermal pools at Parque Terra Nostra, one of the most famous attractions in the Azores. The large iron-rich thermal pool is warm year-round and surrounded by tropical gardens, making it an ideal place to relax after several days of sightseeing. Before leaving Furnas, stop by the town center to sample local pastries or mineral water directly from the natural springs scattered throughout town. This slower-paced day offers a completely different side of São Miguel and is often a highlight for first-time visitors.
Day 4: Nordeste and São Miguel’s Hidden Gems
The eastern side of São Miguel feels quieter and less touristy, making it perfect for travelers looking to experience the island’s more peaceful landscapes. Drive toward Nordeste, stopping frequently at scenic viewpoints along the way. One of the most beautiful stops is Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego, where colorful gardens overlook dramatic coastal cliffs. Nearby, Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada offers another incredible panoramic viewpoint that’s especially stunning in the morning light.

Continue to Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a beautiful park filled with waterfalls, stone bridges, and lush greenery that feels straight out of a fantasy movie. This area is one of the best places on the island for easy walking trails and photography. If you have extra time, consider driving farther south to the small village of Faial da Terra for a quieter local experience and access to additional hiking trails. End the day with a scenic coastal drive back across the island.

Day 5: Whale Watching, Beaches, and a Relaxed Final Day
For your final day in São Miguel, slow down and enjoy some of the island’s coastal experiences before heading home. Start with a whale watching tour from Ponta Delgada, where you’ll have the chance to see dolphins, sperm whales, or even blue whales depending on the season. The Azores are considered one of the best whale watching destinations in Europe thanks to the deep Atlantic waters surrounding the islands. 💡Book ahead as these tours do sell out quickly.
After your tour, spend the afternoon relaxing at one of São Miguel’s black sand beaches. Or if you prefer explore more of Ponta Delgada.
Five days in São Miguel is enough time to experience volcanic landscapes, hot springs, waterfalls, charming towns, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the Azores, making it an unforgettable island getaway.
